Leprosy

It is the chronic bacterial infection caused by Mycobacterium leprae. It primarily affects the skin , mucous membrane , peripheral nervous system , eyes and testes. The disease forms according to the response of person’s Immune System. It is also known as Hansen’s Disease. It is curable but if untreated gets many complications.

ACCORDING TO AYURVEDA
 It is the skin disease known as “Kushta” in Ayurvedic Texts. The elements which causes kushta are :: Vata , Pitta , Kapha ( Three Doshas) and four Dushya Skin ( Twak) , Rakta (Blood) , Mansa ( Muscles) , Rasa ( Water contents of Body).
In Ayurveda Skin Diseases are divided into two main categories
MAHAKUSHTA – Major Skin Diseases – it is further divided into seven types.
KSHUDRAKUSHTA – Minor Skin Diseases-- it is further divided into eleven types.
The dominant dosha from Vata , Pitta and Kapha shows their features.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
The infected person with mycobacterium may gets leprosy from 6 months to 40 years or longer. The average incubation perios is two to three years. The first sign of the Leprosy is usually feeling of numbness , which may precede skin lesions by a no of years. Temperatue is the first sensation lost , then by light touch , pain and then  deep pressure. Sensory loss usually begins in the toes and fingertips.

AYURVEDIC TREATMENT FOR LEPROSY
Healing the skin internally and externally is the main treatment of Ayurveda. There are many herbs of Ayurveda which are very effective and safe for Kushta’ skin diseases. Treatment of Skin Diseases responds well when treated at their early stage manifestations. In early stages of vataja Skin Diseases use ghrita , in Pittaja venesection with theraupetic purgation and in kaphaja theurapeutic emessis are very effective. They all all are detoxification processes of Panchakarma Therapies.

  • The peel of Vhibhitiki fruit is one of the most effective Ayurvedic remedy.
  • The seeds of Babchi and the oil obtained from seed is used internally as well as externally.
  • Haridra
  • Pancha Tikt Ghrit Guggulu
  • Mandukaparmi – Gota kola
  • Chalmoogra oil for local application
  • Neem leaves for oral use and Neem oil for Local use
  • Kahdira in power or qwatha form
  • Chandanam wood
  • Tankana Bhasama
  • Immunomodulatory herbs like Geloy , Tulasi , Ashwagandha.
